2008 RIDGEBACK RODEO INFO/ENTRY FORM

Plans are under way for the third annual Ridgeback Rodeo here at TerraCotta Kennels. The rodeo will
again be held the last weekend in July (July 24, 25, 26 and 27). We've added
an extra day this year! This page will be continually updated and possibly changed as time draws near,so check back
often for scheduling times, entry form and new information. Nothing is set in stone and things can change.
The entry form is now available below and all interested Rodeo participants should have been notified by email by now. If
you did not get this email and would like to be on this list, please let us know. We will be looking for event managers and
volunteers, so if you're interested, please let us know that too. Plus, event managers' dogs get free entry in
the rodeo! (And it's a lot of fun!)
6/12/08 FLASH: OUR OBEDIENCE EVENT MANAGER HAS COME FORWARD! SEE BELOW UNDER
"OBEDIENCE".
PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE PAGE CAREFULLY BEFORE ENTERING ON THE
DOWNLOADABLE ENTRY FORM BELOW. I THINK ALL OR MOST OF YOUR QUESTIONS CAN BE ANSWERED HERE. IF NOT, GIVE ME A CALL
OR DROP ME AN EMAIL AT THE ADDRESS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE.
New Flash 4/11/08: Updated ATTS and CGC/TDI info. Please read below
under those headings!! Jerry Hope, our ATTS Chief Tester, will be putting on a super seminar I'm calling the "Superdog
Seminar" relating to his new book. Read about this below also!
FLASH-HRA HUNTING CLASS 1 QUALIFIERS AND TRIALS ARE PRE-ENTRY
ONLY! NO GATE ENTRIES. PLEASE READ THE HUNTING INFO PARAGRAPH BELOW CAREFULLY AND READ THE RULES ON THE HRA WEBSITE
LINKED BELOW. CALL OR EMAIL WITH ANY QUESTIONS. IF YOU HAVE A DOG WITH GOOD HUNTING INSTINCTS OR HAVE A DOG THAT
IS ALREADY CLASS 1 QUALIFIED, YOU COULD WALK AWAY FROM THE RODEO WITH A HUNTING TITLED RIDGEBACK - JHR(JUNIOR HUNTING RIDGEBACK) TO
BE EXACT. COOL, HUH!
FLASH: Between the hunting and the blanks that are fired for the ATTS Temperament tests, I would
be hesitant about bringing a gun-shy dog to the Rodeo. He/she would be awfully uncomfortable the whole weekend (or cured
;).
FLASH: MOTELS ARE LISTED AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS
PAGE. IF ANYONE HAS A PROBLEM GETTING A ROOM, PLEASE LET US KNOW! UNFORTUNATELY, THE BUNK ROOMS IN THE LODGE ARE
NOT AVAILABLE FOR ENTRANTS. EVENT MANAGERS ALL STAY THERE AND IT WILL PROBABLY BE FULL.
FLASH: THERE IS NOT ROOM IN THE LODGE FOR DOGS.
MOST FOLKS LEAVE THEIR DOGS IN THEIR VEHICLES OR X-PENS OR COVERED CRATES WHEN THEY ARE NOT PARTICIPATING IN AN EVENT.
BRING SHADE AND SUPPLIES AS IF ATTENDING AN OUTDOOR DOG SHOW.
DOUBLE FLASH: CHILDREN ARE WELCOME, BUT THEY
MUST BE ATTENDED AND UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES!! JUST LIKE THE DOGS!

AGILITY:
There will be a complete Ridgeback-sized agility course set up for your practice and enjoyment. No age limit but use common sense and listen to your instructor. The versatile folks from Buckeye
Tracking Club will be helping out in this ring on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If anyone out there is well versed in agility,
please come forward and let us know if you would like to help out. For more information about AKC agility go to:
ATTS - AMERICAN TEMPERAMENT TESTING SOCIETY:
We have received approval for the temperament test date of Saturday July 26. All
entrants must be at the orientation at 9:00am. We are happy to announce that our Chief Tester will again be Jerry Hope. Jerry
was Chief Tester at our National in 2005 in Perry, GA and at the 1st Rodeo in 2006. Dogs
must be at least 18 months old. There is an extra fee of $25.00 for this test if entered in advance
along with your rodeo entry. Day of entry fee will be $30.00.(Example: You want to have 2 dogs tested and that
is all you are interested in. You must pay $65 for 1 dog entry in the Rodeo, $10 for 2nd dog entry and $25 for 2 ATTS
tests for a total of $125. Then you can try out all the other events available on that Saturday. See Rodeo
Entry Form). Please try to enter in advance so Jerry will know how many dogs he/she will be testing.
We are looking for 2 additional testers to assist Jerry and any apprentice testers who may
want to learn. If you would like to be involved, please contact Karen Watson at TerraCotta Kennels (contact info at
bottom of page). Test entry forms will be available on site or you can download from their website and have
filled out in advance. Test form MUST be double-sided!! For information on the American
Temperament Testing Society or to download an entry form go to:
CGC/TDI-CANINE GOOD CITIZEN/THERAPY DOG INTERNATIONAL
CGC/TDI testing will be available at the rodeo all 4 days. The price of the test is included in the cost
of your rodeo entry. Jerry Hope, our ATTS Chief Tester, is also a CGC/TDI tester and has agreed to
do this for us too all weekend. ALL Ridgebacks should be able to get their CGC title to prove their worth as
the intelligent and wonderful companion dogs and good canine citizens that they are. It only takes a little training!
There is no age limit. For more information about AKC'c CGC program or the additional TDI tests check out the following
links:
CONFORMATION HANDLING CLASSES:
We are looking for an event manager/handling instructor for the conformation ring, someone experienced in
handling Ridgebacks and who is a good teacher.
Handling classes will be available all weekend to brush up on your handling skills for the fun match on Sunday!
There is no age limit for these classes, but we will try to put similar age groups together.
CONFORMATION FUN MATCH:
Sunday only at about 2pm. All ages welcome....classes will be divided. Judge or judges to be announced.
Ribbons, prizes, trophies!
FOOD/FUN - COOKOUT, STEAK FRY, BONFIRES AND HAYRIDES:
Friday night burgers, hotdogs and sweet corn cookout and Saturday night steak fry (the social event
of the weekend!), great bonfires and real hayrides for you night owls. The rest of the menu is being planned. See
Ridgeback Rodeo Entry Form for food pre-orders. Food and drinks will be available for purchase all weekend.
HERDING INSTINCT CERTIFICATION (HIC):
Kelly Malone is returning this year to head up our Herding event. Kelly said last year that our breed representation
at the rodeo had at least as much and maybe more herding instinct than some AKC herding breeds! Kelly is an AHBA (American
Herding Breed Association) judge and has German Shepherds. Let your Ridgeback show you his/her herding talents (or not!).
Last year this was one of the bigger attractions at the Rodeo. It's great fun to watch and very interesting to
see our dogs transform into a working dog right before our eyes. HIC certificates will be passed out for dogs that make
the grade. Kelly needs at least 10 dogs per day to make it worth her while, so sign up soon!
Due to the high cost of transporting a dog-broke herd of sheep, there is an extra fee of $30 per dog for
the HIC test. This is the advance entry fee. Day of rodeo herding entry fee will be $35.
Friday and Saturday only!!
Kelly has agreed to stay an extra day (Saturday) for dogs that pass their instinct test. For an additional
$35 per dog, Kelly will show you where to go from here and how to advance in the sport of herding with your Ridgeback.
For more information go to the AHBA website or the AKC herding event links below:
HUNTING
The HRA (Hunting Ridgeback Association) will be holding class-one bird qualifiers and trials at the rodeo
this year. This is an exciting and brand new event and we hope to make it annual. Let's not lose the hunting instinct our
breed still possesses! Matthew Valdivia, an avid hunter with his Ridgebacks, will be judging these events.
This sport may be new for some of you, so if you have any questions I suggest you email Matthew at: mowerman@mail.com or myself (Karen Watson) at: kalimba@alltel.net and we will be happy to answer your questions. Dogs must be 6 months old to enter.
The extra fee is $35/dog for each qualifier and $25/dog for each trial. This fee is
to cover the cost of the quail. Your dog MUST qualify before he/she can enter a trial.
We don't think this will be a problem, but if you have more than 2 or 3 dogs you wish to get qualified, please
split them over the 2 days (Thursday and Saturday) so as not to monopolize the event. A good amount of time is spent
with each dog.
THESE EVENTS WILL BE PRE-ENTRY ONLY AS PER CURRENT HRA RULES. THERE WILL BE NO GATE
ENTRIES. ENTRIES WILL CLOSE JUNE 25, 2008, WHICH MEANS WE MUST HAVE YOUR COMPLETED RODEO ENTRY FORMS AND HRA
FORMS AND TOTAL PAYMENT IN OUR HANDS BY THIS DATE SO THAT EVERYTHING CAN BE FORWARDED TO THE HRA FOR THEIR PRE-EVENT PAPERWORK
TO BE DONE. YOU MUST DOWNLOAD THE HRA FORMS FROM THE WEBSITE LINKS BELOW, PRINT THEM OUT, FILL THEM OUT AND SIGN THEM
AND FORWARD ALL TO ME BY 6/25/08. NO EXCEPTIONS. ALL ENTRANTS MUST FILL OUT AND SIGN LINK #1. THEN
USE LINK #2 TO ENTER THE QUALIFIER ON THURS 7/24 OR USE LINK #3 TO ENTER THE QUALIFIER ON SAT. 7/26. IF YOU HAVE
A DOG THAT IS ALREADY CLASS 1 QUALIFIED (I GUESS THERE ARE A FEW OF YOU OUT THERE!) USE LINK #5 FOR THE TRIAL ON FRI.
7/25 OR LINK #6 FOR THE TRIAL ON SUN. 7/27. I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO READ THE WHOLE WEBSITE AT LINK #4:
LURE COURSING PRACTICE/ AKC JC TESTS
Gabriele DiFranco and Cathy Acosta will be the event managers for the coursing and racing events. We will
have a complete course set up all weekend for practice runs. JC tests Saturday and Sunday only.
Raisin River Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Michigan (RRRRCOM) hosted the AKC JC tests last year and have agreed
to host again this year! Premiums and entry forms are available for download at the end of this paragraph and will also
be available at the rodeo for gate entries. Pre-entry will be $15 and gate entries will be $20. Dogs must be 1 year old to run in a JC test and with a little
luck you could earn a JC title over the weekend. Practices are free. There are two organizations
that host lure coursing field trials, the American Kennel Club (AKC) and the originator of the sport, The American Sighthound
Field Association (ASFA). To learn more about Lure Coursing, check out their websites:

OBEDIENCE CLASSES:
June Garand is a life-long dog owner with about 6 years experience training and showing dogs in obedience and
rally. She has shown in AKC, UKC and APDT trials, along with teaching obedience classes, dog training club membership, stewarding
at both AKC and UKC trials and working as a "judge"/steward at fun matches and correction clinics. Over the last 4 years
June has trained and shown our breed in Obedience and Rally and has developed an understanding of the unique personalities
and training needs of the Rhodesian Ridgeback. One of June's dogs, UCDX Salem from RRResQ CD, RE, CGC. RL1-Award of
Excellence, was ranked by RRCUS #2 in obedience in 2006, with average scores of 193.33. As Salem's name states,
he is a resue as are all of June's current dogs, which makes her all the more special as event manager for obedience at the
Ridgeback Rodeo. She also is a volunteer and foster Mom for Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue.
Welcome June!!!!!!
PHOTOGRAPHERS:
1) Marilyn Giesige of "On Location" is returning
again for her 3rd Annual Rodeo. Marilyn does wonderful collages that are virtually seamless and enjoys doing head shots
and portrait work also. Just let her know at the beginning of the rodeo which events you want photographed and she will try
to be there. She did the great Rodeo poster that may be incorporated into a t-shirt!
(Dan Gauss of "Shot On Site" fame will be unable to attend this year due to a prior commitment.)
RALLY PRACTICE:
A ring will be set up for rally instruction, run-throughs and practice. No age limit. The Buckeye
Tracking folks will help you out in this ring too. For more information about AKC Rally go to:

RAFFLES/"REAL" LION HUNT:
Try your hand at this game of skill! Buy some tickets, "kill" the lion and see who wins! Whoever
"kills" the lion the most times wins! Better practice up!
Raffles, raffles, raffles! If you have anything to donate, please let us know. Wait till you see
Kim Lucchini's (the raffle queen extraordinaire) raffle table this year!
All proceeds will be split between Ridgeback Rescue and the AKC Rhodesian Ridgeback Donor Advised Fund for health
and genetics research.

STRAIGHT RACING PRACTICE
We will have a straight race (or as I like to call it - drag racing!) practice course set up for anyone
interested in this fast sport. Your event manager will show you how to introduce your dog to the wonderful
"squawker". No age limit here, but use common sense and listen to experienced racers that will be available to help
you.
The Large Gazehound Racing Association (LGRA) sponsors the real race meets and you can find more information
on their website:
SUPERDOG SEMINAR:
"The Breeder's Guide to Raising Superstar Dogs" is the name of the new book by Jerry Hope and will be the basis
of his informative learning seminar. Early socialization and imprinting techniques are key elements of the book and seminar.
The program was developed to prepare puppies for whatever may lay ahead, whether it be simple companionship, lure
coursing, competition obedience or the conformation ring. The seminar is geared to breeders, current and future
puppy owners and trainers alike. The book will be available for purchase at the Rodeo. For more information about Jerry, his
affiliations or his training philosophies go to:
TRACKING:
Buckeye Tracking Club and Karen Phillips will be returning again this year to show us how to get started in tracking
with our Ridgebacks. Thursday, Friday and Saturday only. No age limit and pups are welcome. Tracking
games, track laying and short tracks to try your pup on. Karen Phillips is also an AKC Tracking judge and can do
tracking certifications for anyone that is ready for that big step! Just let us know in advance so a track can get laid
for you! For more information about AKC Tracking Tests and getting started in tracking go to the AKC website:
VENDORS:
We are looking for interested vendors to come to the rodeo. Free space, just bring your stuff to sell!
If you know of anyone that might be interested, please send them our way. Coursing blankets, leashes, collars, slip
leads, muzzles, whatever!
